Chapter 1

Independence Eve and a Refinery at Four Years

Emily Martin

KMKT IR Hub Radio. West Africa News Desk. It's Wednesday evening, September 30th, and tomorrow Nigeria turns sixty six.

Zach Martin

Sixty sixth Independence anniversary, and the Federal Government has already declared Thursday, October 1st, a public holiday. So, uh, this is the calm before the parade.

Emily Martin

Calm, mm. Not entirely. This morning we had the President just back in Lagos. Since then, he's signed the Appropriation Amendment Number 4 Bill, 2025.

Zach Martin

Which does what, exactly?

Emily Martin

Extends the implementation period of the 2025 budget.

Zach Martin

Wait. The 2025 budget. We're at the end of September 2026.

Emily Martin

Yep. And the National Assembly headline says it's the fourth extension.

Zach Martin

Fourth! That's, that's like pushing a school deadline four times and still calling it on time. Small, steady habits matter, but that's not the habit I meant.

Emily Martin

Ha. And tomorrow he addresses the nation for the anniversary. You'll remember what he told reporters at the Lagos airport after four weeks away, when they asked about the health rumours. Ready to kick, ready to work, there's nothing wrong. He said rumours will always emanate from politics.

Zach Martin

Short and punchy. Though, I mean, he's also got strategic meetings lined up in Lagos with political leaders ahead of the 2027 elections.

Emily Martin

Right. Now, not everyone is in a holiday mood. Late today, Borno State police arrested five men in Maiduguri wearing shirts that said Tinubu Must Go, and they've been charged.

Zach Martin

Charged with what, do we know?

Emily Martin

The police command has explained what it says it recovered from the five. Amnesty International rejected that claim. So, two accounts, and we can't settle it tonight.

Zach Martin

Yeah, I'd hold both loosely.

Emily Martin

Mm. What strikes me is the picture, though. A budget stretched a fourth time, a public holiday, and a shirt that lands five people in court. Those sit awkwardly side by side.

Zach Martin

Fair. Ceremony on one side, people's daily stress on the other.

Emily Martin

KMKT IR Hub Radio. West Africa News Desk. Ouagadougou, where there's a very different kind of ceremony.

Zach Martin

Okay, this one I like. Burkina Faso's first gold refinery, Raffinor BF. Captain Ibrahim Traoré inaugurated it Monday. It cost more than 11 billion CFA francs, about 19 million dollars.

Emily Martin

That's, um, cheaper than I expected for a national milestone.

Zach Martin

Right? Financed by the state, including through the national precious metals company SONASP, plus private sector partners. Here's the part I keep chewing on. It starts at 164 tonnes a year, with a target of 515. And the authorities say Burkina produced 94 tonnes last year.

Emily Martin

So it's built for way more gold than the country digs up.

Zach Martin

Exactly the point. It's like building a ten lane highway for a village road. Either you expect a lot more traffic, or you plan to bring in traffic from next door. Reports suggest the ambition is processing gold from elsewhere in the region.

Emily Martin

And the Mines Minister said, this is the day we take back the keys to our own house.

Zach Martin

Good line. And today is exactly four years since Traoré took power. Coup in September 2022, per the BBC.

Emily Martin

So does a refinery fix the hard part? Because I keep hearing smuggling.

Zach Martin

That's my caution. A refinery only helps if the gold actually reaches it. The artisanal sector is where smuggling lives, and the government has suspended artisanal gold exports since 2024. Plus, big areas are outside full government control. Processing capacity is one thing, getting the gold through the door is another.

Emily Martin

So, a strong first brick. Not the whole house.

Chapter 2

The Sahel Break, West African Ballots, and Late Scorelines

Emily Martin

KMKT IR Hub Radio. West Africa News Desk. Another Burkina thread. On Sunday in New York, the foreign ministers of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger said their withdrawal from ECOWAS is irreversible.

Zach Martin

Irreversible. That's a door welded shut.

Emily Martin

But not slammed. They also said they want a partnership with ECOWAS, built on a clear legal framework.

Zach Martin

So, divorced, but wanting joint custody of the region.

Emily Martin

Ha, sort of. They made those comments meeting diaspora members from the Alliance of Sahel States, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

Zach Martin

Meanwhile, ballots. Guinea Bissau's ousted president, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, announced Monday night he'll run in the next presidential election.

Emily Martin

He was toppled in the military coup of November 26th, 2025, and he's been in exile since. He's expected to come home soon, and the opposition is already criticising that.

Zach Martin

And in The Gambia, President Adama Barrow promised a credible December 6th election and urged everyone to accept the outcome.

Emily Martin

Accept the outcome. That's the hard part of any election, isn't it.

Zach Martin

Every time. Okay. Sports?

Emily Martin

KMKT IR Hub Radio. West Africa News Desk. Sports wrap. Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifiers, and the favourites had a rough Tuesday.

Zach Martin

Guinea Bissau beat Nigeria three to nothing, in Group L. Second match for both.

Emily Martin

Three nil over the Super Eagles. Ouch.

Zach Martin

And The Gambia won four to two at Ghana, in Accra. Group C. Ghana had led two nil.

Emily Martin

Wait, Ghana were two up and lost?

Zach Martin

Two up, lost by two. Never stop playing until the whistle, that's the lesson. And Senegal got their first win, one nil over Ethiopia in Group J, in Bahir Dar. Ibrahim Mbaye, first half.

Emily Martin

Winning without sparkle still counts. One more item, a quieter one. Côte d'Ivoire and the African Development Bank Group launched a 24 million dollar investment to strengthen climate resilience and restore forest landscapes.

Zach Martin

Small steady investments, compounding over time. I'll take that kind of headline.

Emily Martin

Me too. That's the evening desk. We're back tomorrow morning with Nigeria's Independence Day coverage.

Zach Martin

Sleep well. Talk then.
