Chapter 1
Ghana and Nigeria Saturday File
Emily Martin
Good evening. This is KMKT IR Hub Radio and the West Africa News Desk, October 3, 2026, P M edition. It's Saturday, October 3, 2026, and this is the evening bulletin after our morning show.
Zach Martin
I'm Zach Martin, with Emily Martin. This is a late day follow, so we're tracking what moved since this morning. Four segments tonight, and everything is attributed to the outlet that reported it.

Ghana first, from GhanaWeb's Saturday archive. The Manhyia South MP appeared before a weekend court as EOCO sought a bail decision, and the court granted him GH¢10 million bail with two sureties. GhanaWeb also reports that Parliament condemned his continued detention.
Zach Martin
The party calendar is busy too. GhanaWeb is livestreaming the 2026 NPP National Delegates Conference, with delegates gathered at Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi to elect new national leaders. On the sports side, Ghana has appointed a five man panel to find a new Black Stars head coach.
Emily Martin
And a follow on the teachers' issue we touched this morning. GhanaWeb reports the government has pledged to pay teachers' promotion arrears by October 30. That's a date listeners can hold officials to. GhanaWeb also lists that President Mahama will deliver a keynote at the Alamein Africa Forum in Egypt, and we'll return to that at the close.

Nigeria's Saturday file, from New Telegraph, Naija News and Premium Times. New Telegraph reports that Rotimi Amaechi, the former Rivers State governor and former transport minister, blamed President Tinubu's economic policies for the death of his mother, Dame Mary Amaechi. That is his allegation, as reported.
Emily Martin
Set that beside the oil claim we covered this morning. New Telegraph reports Minister of State for Petroleum Heineken Lokpobiri attributed higher crude output and investment inflows to Tinubu's reforms, and reported him saying production rose over 80 percent. Same day, two very different readings of the same economic record.
Zach Martin
Premium Times adds Independence Day context from October 1. Tinubu said the economy grew by more than four percent in 2026, that inflation had fallen from its peak, and he acknowledged that millions still struggle with food, education, healthcare and transport costs. Lagos Governor Sanwo Olu urged Nigerians to remain united.
Emily Martin
Naija News has two more items. Tinubu, through his lawyers, asked a U.S. federal court in Washington to block release of additional redacted FBI and DEA records about him, citing privacy protections under FOIA Exemption 7C, in a case brought by Aaron Greenspan. Tinubu has denied any wrongdoing. And FCT Minister Nyesom Wike told Akpor Kingdom stakeholders in Rivers State that his return ahead of 2027 is for his people, not for what he will get.
Zach Martin
Two quick ones. New Telegraph says the Aliko Dangote Foundation launched a Student Share Grant Initiative for Nigerian students, aimed at early investing and financial literacy. And Premium Times reports Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced a two day national security summit for October 12 to 13 at the International Conference Centre in Abuja.

Markets and the Wider Weekend

Markets and activity, desk tone only. The Rio Times Africa Intelligence Brief, citing Leadership on October 3, says the Stanbic IBTC Bank Nigeria PMI rose to 56.4 in September from 54.3 in August, the highest since February 2022. A reading above 50 signals expansion.
Emily Martin
Leadership also reported new orders rose for an eighth straight month and all four monitored sectors expanded. The same survey recorded sharp rises in purchase prices tied to fuel, raw materials and labour. So it's growth, with costs attached.
Zach Martin
Rio Times Saturday snapshots: the NGX 30 at 4,649, up 0.60 percent. Ghana's GSE at 14,568, down 2.15 percent. Official USD/NGN at 1,359, down 0.08 percent. Those are Rio Times figures.
Emily Martin
And a reminder that this is a news reading, not investment advice.

Last segment, Guinea Bissau and the wider weekend. Rio Times, citing Africanews on October 2, reports the junta blocked former president Umaro Sissoco Embaló's planned October 4 return from exile in Morocco. The junta said security conditions were not in place, and that restrictions on demonstrations and political gatherings remain. The presidential election is set for December 6.
Emily Martin
That sits beside this morning's border block we reported. Now the wider diplomatic backdrop. Ghana's President Mahama is due to speak at Egypt's Alamein Africa Forum, as GhanaWeb listed. And the Egyptian presidency said a four way summit with Eritrea, Somalia and Sudan is set for Sunday, October 4, as Anadolu Agency relayed on October 3 via Rio Times.
Zach Martin
To be clear, that summit is not a West African domestic story. It's context for the diplomacy around West Africa, nothing more.
Emily Martin
That completes the evening bulletin. The morning desk is already filed.
