Chapter 1

The Independence Day Paradox

Zach Martin

KMKT IR Hub Radio. West Africa News Desk. It's Thursday evening, October 1, 2026, and Nigeria is marking its 66th Independence Anniversary, a public holiday, under the theme From Reforms to Stability: Consolidating Nigeria's Renewed Hope for Shared Prosperity. That's per Fellow Press.

Emily Martin

And the message from the top, WADR reports, is that President Bola Tinubu says the era of difficult economic reforms is over. He pledged a lower cost of living.

Zach Martin

Right. And at the Independence lecture, Secretary to the Government George Akume put numbers on it. Citing World Bank figures, real GDP growth reached 4.2 percent in the first half of 2026, up from 3.9 percent a year earlier. He also firmly ruled out any return of the petrol subsidy.

Emily Martin

Hmm. So that's our whole evening in one tension, isn't it? Stabilization on the spreadsheet, and then, um, the grocery bill.

Zach Martin

Think of it like a coach telling you the team's stats are up, while the players are still running on empty. The scoreboard and the legs don't always agree.

Emily Martin

And the legs are about to walk out. Tell them.

Zach Martin

Fellow Press, citing Vanguard, reports that the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council has confirmed that its three day warning strike will begin at midnight on Friday, October 2. That council represents eight public sector unions, and the Nigeria Labour Congress is backing it.

Emily Martin

Eight unions.

Zach Martin

Eight. They say the president's broadcast didn't touch their core demands. Petrol cut to ₦500 per litre. An immediate wage award. And tripartite negotiations on a new national minimum wage, to replace the ₦70,000 baseline.

Emily Martin

And that, that, that ₦70,000 is the part that stays with me. A worker doesn't feel 4.2 percent growth. They feel the food price, and the, the bus fare to get to the office. When those climb faster than the paycheque, a headline number is cold comfort.

Zach Martin

Fair. Though I'd add, the government's point is that stability has to come first. The test now is whether it reaches the kitchen table.

Emily Martin

Mm. Which is exactly the test the unions are setting for tomorrow.

Zach Martin

Politics doesn't pause for a holiday either. Fellow Press notes that Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike says he will resign from the Federal Executive Council on January 17, 2027, if Tinubu fails to win both Rivers State and the FCT in the January 16 presidential election.

Emily Martin

That's a bold bet to put on the record.

Zach Martin

Sport brought no relief. The Super Eagles lost three to nil to Guinea-Bissau in Bissau. Guinea-Bissau now leads AFCON 2027 qualifying Group L with six points. Nigeria has three.

Emily Martin

And only one non host berth remaining, so, so there's not much room for error.

Zach Martin

Not much at all.

Emily Martin

One more, and it's a strange one. OkayAfrica, citing Reuters, details the September 30 Abuja arraignment of Adeniyi Adeyemi. Prosecutors say he invented a presidential agency. The court filing says the purported agency secured roughly $1 million in this year's federal budget.

Zach Martin

A million dollars. For an agency the presidency says it never established.

Emily Martin

He pleaded not guilty to eight counts of forgery and impersonation. He's remanded in custody until October 12. He told local media the agency was genuine, so that's his side.

Zach Martin

Which raises the institutional question. How many desks did that paperwork cross?

Chapter 2

Sahel Fault Lines and the Regional Horizon

Emily Martin

KMKT IR Hub Radio. West Africa News Desk. Let's look across the Sahel, where Burkina Faso is marking four years since Captain Ibrahim Traoré seized power.

Zach Martin

OkayAfrica reports crowds gathered Wednesday night, September 30, at Place de la Révolution in Ouagadougou. Residents praised the army's reorganization and the Rapid Intervention Battalions. But jihadist groups still pressure large parts of the country, and some towns face blockades.

Emily Martin

And on Monday, Traoré opened Raffinor BF, the country's first gold refinery. It cost about $19 million. It can process 164 tons of gold a year, with a target capacity of 515 tons.

Zach Martin

Wait, so it's running at about a third of the target?

Emily Martin

Roughly, yes. His line was that gold must not only be extracted, it must be processed, controlled, valued and certified at home.

Zach Martin

Analyst Issouf Ouédraogo sees visible progress in infrastructure, and the government says more than 1.3 million displaced people have returned home. But he says human rights and freedom of expression still need work.

Emily Martin

Next door, Mali. Africanews reports that Mali's new school year began Thursday with more than 2,400 schools unable to reopen. President Assimi Goïta declared it the Year of Education and Culture.

Zach Martin

That's a lot of children starting the year without a classroom.

Emily Martin

KMKT IR Hub Radio. West Africa News Desk. To Ghana now, a story about money you can hold.

Zach Martin

Business Insider Africa reports that Ghana will introduce a redesigned series of cedi banknotes called the Heritage Series starting November 3, 2026. It covers all eight denominations, GH¢1 up to GH¢200.

Emily Martin

Governor Johnson Pandit Asiama calls the cedi a symbol of economic sovereignty. The notes get upgraded durability and stronger counterfeiting protection. Value is unchanged, and existing notes stay legal tender. He urged people not to rush to exchange them.

Zach Martin

And we'll leave it there. This is news, not investment advice.

Emily Martin

In Abidjan, WADR reports the inaugural West Africa Regional Water Forum has wrapped up. ECOWAS, UEMOA and the Permanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel renewed commitments on water security and climate resilience.

Zach Martin

And in Sierra Leone, the map just got bigger. The Extraordinary Gazette formalizes the creation of Bandajuma and Kpanguima districts, along with eight new city and rural councils. That takes the country from 16 districts to 18.

Emily Martin

Last item. OkayAfrica, citing Reuters, reports the NBA has closed NBA Academy Africa in Senegal. It trained around 110 students since 2018, and training moves to a new global academy in Abu Dhabi.

Zach Martin

The NBA says it still invests in Africa, through the Basketball Africa League and Basketball Without Borders. But a former adviser says it shows an extraction mindset. As a broadcaster, I'd say, um, local capacity takes years to build. Consolidating it is quick, and rebuilding it is slow.

Emily Martin

KMKT IR Hub Radio. West Africa News Desk. Tonight's thread: the gap between stability on paper and life in the household. Watch the midnight start of Nigeria's public sector warning strike, whether the cost of living actually moves, Mali's closed schools, and Ghana's November 3 rollout.

Zach Martin

That's the October 1, 2026 evening edition. I'm Zach Martin.

Emily Martin

And I'm Emily Martin. Good night.
