Chapter 1

Diplomatic Bridge Building and Sovereign Economic Realities

Zach Martin

Monday morning, September 28, 2026. This is the KMKT IR Hub Radio news desk. We are jumping right into a really delicate diplomatic squeeze that just played out in New York at the United Nations General Assembly.

Emily Martin

Vice President Kashim Shettima sat down with General Birame Diop, the incoming ECOWAS Commission President. The core message from Abuja was, um, rebuild regional unity. Specifically, open direct engagement with the Alliance of Sahel States, that is Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.

Zach Martin

Right, but notice the underlying tension there. Shettima is talking about building bridges of friendship, but ECOWAS just doubled down on its anti coup stance. They authorized standby force deployments involving troops from Benin, Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, and Sierra Leone.

Emily Martin

It is a tough paradox. You are trying to extend an olive branch to military governments that walked out, while simultaneously sharpening your collective security tools so another sudden takeover cannot happen. It is diplomacy with a very firm military posture right behind it.

Zach Martin

And while all this regional friction plays out at the top, the street level numbers tell an entirely different story. The African Development Bank just put out their West Africa Economic Outlook for 2026.

Emily Martin

Headline numbers look solid at first glance, right? Regional growth hit 4.8 percent in 2025, and they are projecting 4.7 percent in 2026, supported by agriculture, mining, hydrocarbons, and infrastructure investment.

Zach Martin

Yeah, four point seven percent sounds healthy. But, uh, when you peel back the headline, the per capita growth rate is crawling at around 2.5 percent. That gap means if you are running an everyday household, your wages simply are not keeping pace with food prices or imported fuel.

Emily Martin

Because the macro output from extractives does not automatically trickle down into family wallets. And you can see governments grappling with that discipline on their balance sheets. Look at Senegal.

Zach Martin

Senegal reached a staff level agreement on key economic policies that could underpin a 36 month arrangement with the IMF. About 2.2 billion dollars under the Extended Credit Facility. But it comes with very strict requirements for board approval.

Emily Martin

Decisive corrective action on previous debt misreporting, plus seeking a formal debt treatment. Interestingly, credit analysts note that local currency debt in regional CFA francs is explicitly shielded, keeping domestic commercial lenders insulated while international obligations get restructured.

Zach Martin

It is about restoring trust without breaking the local financial plumbing. Meanwhile in Accra, the Bank of Ghana is taking a physical approach to public confidence.

Emily Martin

Governor Johnson Pandit Asiama announced the rollout of the Heritage Series cedi notes starting November 3. Upgraded security threads, better anti counterfeiting durability, across all eight denominations.

Zach Martin

From the one cedi note up to the two hundred. No five hundred cedi bill, despite wild social media rumors, and the existing paper stays valid legal tender alongside it. Simple, steady operational upgrades, exactly how central banks should manage paper stability.

Chapter 2

Private Megaprojects and the West African Cyber Frontier

Emily Martin

Speaking of sheer scale, let us turn to the private sector megaproject making massive waves across the continent. Alhaji Aliko Dangote just hosted Kenyan President William Ruto at the Lekki complex in Lagos.

Zach Martin

That is the 650,000 barrel per day refinery. Ruto called it a masterpiece of science and engineering, though he joked that taking on a build like that requires someone to be almost reckless. But the real headline was Dangote's Vision 2030 roadmap.

Emily Martin

The numbers are, um, staggering. The group is targeting over 115 billion dollars in group turnover and 35 billion dollars in annual profit by 2030.

Zach Martin

Thirty five billion in yearly net profit. To put that in perspective, that would place them among the most lucrative energy conglomerates on earth. But we have to look at the execution math. That plan relies on 50 billion dollars in capital spending over the next four years.

Emily Martin

Including the brand new refinery project in Lamu, Kenya, which broke ground with five regional heads of state attending, and an 8 billion dollar liquefied natural gas facility.

Zach Martin

And that 13 metric tons per annum LNG plant is, as Dangote himself pointed out, starting from ground zero. It is an unbuilt plan on a slide deck right now, not operational steel in the mud. Ambition is great, but capital discipline and delivery timelines are where projects actually live or die.

Emily Martin

While industrial titans build physical empires, the digital perimeter across West Africa is facing severe, immediate stress. The Nigeria Computer Emergency Response Team just flagged a massive wave of AI powered phishing and business email compromise attacks.

Zach Martin

The threat vectors are accelerating fast. In the first three months of 2026 alone, research tracked over 281,500 leaked Nigerian user accounts. That puts the country at thirty fourth globally for breaches.

Emily Martin

Which explains why the CyFrica 2026 summit on October 8 at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos has drawn such heavy backing. The National Information Technology Development Agency, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, and Galaxy Backbone have all joined as supporting partners.

Zach Martin

When Nigeria's digital economy is hurtling toward an 18.3 billion dollar valuation, you cannot treat cybersecurity as an IT afterthought. As Obiora Awogu from MTN MoMo pointed out, the question is no longer whether you get hit, it is how fast you isolate, recover, and keep customer trust intact.

Emily Martin

So across the region today, we see fragile diplomatic reconciliations in the Sahel, macro GDP expansion battling household level friction, corporate ambitions scaling toward tens of billions, and critical infrastructure racing to secure its digital gates.

Zach Martin

Four distinct fronts, all demanding steady discipline over hype. Quick informational notice before we sign off, today's broadcast is supported by Leone Assets, providing enterprise asset valuation and risk advisory across West Africa. That wraps up our morning desk for Monday, September 28. Keep your risk measured and your execution steady. We will see you tomorrow.
