Chapter 1

Evening Headlines

Zach Martin

KMKT IR Hub Radio. West Africa News Desk. I'm Zach Martin, and this is your evening bulletin for Friday, October 2, 2026.

Emily Martin

And I'm Emily Martin. Tonight we cover Guinea's independence day, a blocked return in Guinea Bissau, a reported aid suspension in Sierra Leone, Nigeria's busy day, and regional briefs.

Zach Martin

KMKT IR Hub Radio. West Africa News Desk. Guinea marks its 68th Independence Anniversary today. WADR reports President Mamady Doumbouya pledged broader economic benefits from mining, and reaffirmed using mineral resources for development.

Emily Martin

WADR says the Simandou iron ore project sits at the centre of that ambition. It's described as one of the world's largest iron ore deposits, developed with international mining companies.

Zach Martin

Pledges like this become real when revenue reaches households and communities. That's the thing to watch, and tonight we're only reporting what was said.

Zach Martin

KMKT IR Hub Radio. West Africa News Desk. In Guinea Bissau, WADR reports the High Military Command has barred former President Umaro Sissoco Embaló from returning. He had planned to arrive in Bissau October 4 and contest the December 6 election.

Emily Martin

The military says the security conditions needed to guarantee his return aren't in place, citing national security, public order and social stability. WADR adds that the ban on political demonstrations and gatherings during the transition stays.

Zach Martin

So the vote is December 6, and the planned return was October 4. That's the gap the military's decision now sits inside.

Zach Martin

KMKT IR Hub Radio. West Africa News Desk. Now Sierra Leone. WADR reports the European Commission has reportedly suspended 18 million euros in aid, a decision announced Thursday.

Emily Martin

The report links it to a dispute over Freetown's alleged failure to arrest and extradite Dutch drug trafficker Jos Leijdekkers, also known as Bolle Jos. Notice the words reportedly and alleged. They matter here.

Zach Martin

Good reminder. We report what's reported, and no more.

Chapter 2

Nigeria and Regional Briefs

Zach Martin

KMKT IR Hub Radio. West Africa News Desk. Nigeria now. Naija News reports public servants were directed to begin a three day warning strike, October 2 to October 4.

Emily Martin

The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council said its demands were unmet. Naija News lists a lower petrol price, payment of the wage award, and the start of 2027 minimum wage talks.

Zach Martin

On politics, WADR reports Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi challenged President Tinubu's Independence Day claim that the hardest phase of reforms is over.

Emily Martin

In that address, Tinubu said Nigeria was entering an era of shared prosperity. Naija News adds that Atiku questioned rising debt and the hardship facing citizens. Both are presidential aspirants ahead of the January 2027 elections.

Zach Martin

Also, Vanguard reports Cross River Governor Bassey Otu approved reinstatement of about 3,000 local government workers removed from the payroll, after meeting organised labour.

Emily Martin

That's Nigeria tonight. Strike turnout and government responses were not in the reports we have.

Emily Martin

KMKT IR Hub Radio. West Africa News Desk. Regional briefs. In The Gambia, WADR reports President Adama Barrow has begun his 19 day Meet the People Tour, themed YIRIWA, ahead of the December elections.

Zach Martin

WADR says the tour includes 21 public meetings, 31 site visits, and seven project inaugurations and handovers. It also reports questions about the timing.

Emily Martin

In Burkina Faso, an eight day public dialogue runs October 2 to 9 in Ouagadougou, where citizens can question ministers about the government's achievements and priorities for 2026, WADR reports.

Zach Martin

In Liberia, WADR reports civil society groups in Monrovia want tougher mining law enforcement, saying host communities aren't getting a fair share. The call comes amid delays implementing the 2022 Revenue Sharing Act.

Emily Martin

And in Senegal, Justice Minister Moussa Sarr asked the National Assembly to adopt a draft organic law on special credits and funds in a single vote. He said it follows an August 25 Constitutional Council decision.

Zach Martin

That's the evening desk for Friday, October 2, 2026. I'm Zach Martin.

Emily Martin

And I'm Emily Martin. Thanks for listening, and good night from the West Africa Desk on KMKT Radio.
