Chapter 1
Nigeria Security and Politics
Zach Martin
KMKT IR Hub Radio. West Africa News Desk. It's Sunday, October 4, 2026, and this is the evening desk from the West Africa newsroom. I'm Zach Martin.
Emily Martin
And I'm Emily Martin. This is the late day bulletin, so we're picking up the stories that moved since the morning. Zach, we start in southeastern Nigeria.
Zach Martin
KMKT IR Hub Radio. West Africa News Desk. Our lead is security. Naija News reports that gunmen attacked two buses on Thursday along the Owerri Onitsha Road in the Umunoha area of Imo State. The passengers were prospective National Youth Service Corps members travelling from Ibadan toward orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states.
Emily Martin
Naija News reports the abductors then issued a 24 hour ultimatum for a ransom of 1 billion naira, described as 50 million naira per victim. Isiah Akpan, managing director of Uko Akwa Ibom Motors Nigeria Limited, confirmed the demand on Friday. Parents said the callers have been using the victims' own mobile phones.
Zach Martin
On Saturday, families visited the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, at his Bodija residence, with the Oyo Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Abimbola, and the Aseyin of Iseyinland. The Olubadan told them efforts were being made to rescue the victims unharmed. The commissioner said he had been in contact with his Imo counterpart, and he did not say whether any ransom had been paid.
Emily Martin
Now the operational side. A separate Naija News report quotes Imo Commissioner of Police Audu Garba Bosso, who said operatives trailed the abductors into the bush and used drones on Friday to locate a camp. He said entry has been delayed because intelligence indicates the camp is mined with improvised explosive devices. Police say they are preparing to move in with heavy equipment, including bulldozers and armoured personnel carriers.
Zach Martin
One detail to keep straight on the numbers. The ransom and family reporting refers to 20 abducted corps members, while Commissioner Bosso spoke of a camp holding 19. We're attributing each figure to its source, and we won't speculate on how that difference is resolved, or on outcomes.

KMKT IR Hub Radio. West Africa News Desk. Nigerian politics, briefly. Naija News reports that Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike criticised former Rivers governor Rotimi Amaechi over Amaechi's claim that the cost of drugs under the Tinubu administration contributed to his mother's death.
Zach Martin
Speaking in Ahoada, Wike noted Amaechi's years as speaker, governor and minister, and questioned why he could not obtain the medication. He said it was unfortunate to bring a late mother into politics. Those are Wike's words as reported, and Amaechi's claim is as Naija News describes it.
Emily Martin
At a political reception Saturday, Naija News says Wike also vowed that Rivers State will compete with Lagos in voting for President Tinubu in 2027. He said he will resign if Tinubu does not win Rivers and the FCT, and he tied that to January 16 and 17.
Zach Martin
Also from Naija News: the Labour Party youth wing has proposed consultations on alignment with the ruling APC. A statement signed Saturday by Edo State youth leader Ken Omusi says a Friday virtual meeting mandated National Youth Leader Prince Kennedy Ahanotu to begin talks with the APC, the Renewed Hope Movement, the City Boy Movement and Tinubu support groups. The statement cites concerns over recognition and support for youths after the 2023 elections, and says any alignment would be discussed further after consultations.

Ghana, Regional Desk and Sports
Emily Martin
KMKT IR Hub Radio. West Africa News Desk. To Ghana. GhanaWeb reports results from the New Patriotic Party national elections. John Boadu won national chairman. Justin Kodua was re-elected general secretary. Hawa Koomson won national women's organiser, and Abanga Fuseini Yakubu was elected national youth organiser.
Zach Martin
GhanaWeb also carries the headline quoting Dr Mahamudu Bawumia saying winning the 2028 election won't be easy. Other headlines carry calls for humility and unity from party figures, including Patrick Boamah and Patricia Appiagyei.
Emily Martin
And GhanaWeb reports a fire in Koforidua that destroyed shops and homes near the Central Police Station. A firefighter was injured.
Zach Martin
KMKT IR Hub Radio. West Africa News Desk. On the regional desk, Benin Web TV, citing the Senegalese presidency, reports that President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, current ECOWAS chair, was scheduled to visit Egypt and Nigeria from October 2 to 4.
Emily Martin
The programme included an African Union coordination meeting in Egypt, then a working visit to the ECOWAS Commission headquarters in Abuja, and the swearing in of new judges of the Community Court of Justice.
Zach Martin
From the francophone desk, allAfrica's October 4 press review, citing Le 360 Afrique, says Guinea is tightening rules on refined gold exports. The Office guinéen d'expertise is central to processing applications, and any export request is conditioned on prior refining at an approved refinery in Guinea.
Emily Martin
The report says each file must include the weight, the refining certificate, analysis reports before and after treatment, and details such as the airline, flight number and final destination. We're reporting the rules as published, with no market view attached.
Zach Martin
KMKT IR Hub Radio. West Africa News Desk. Sports to close. Naija News reports the Super Eagles held their first training session in Nizhny Novgorod on Saturday night, ahead of Tuesday's friendly against Russia.
Emily Martin
Kick-off is 6 pm Nigerian time at Nizhny Novgorod Stadium. Captain Wilfred Ndidi, Bright Osayi Samuel and Akpe Victory have withdrawn, and coach Éric Chelle has invited John Otomewo and Vince Osuji as replacements for Ndidi and Victory.
Zach Martin
That's the evening desk. Our reporting draws on published work from Naija News, GhanaWeb, Benin Web TV and allAfrica.
